The Role of Migration and Social Policy in Shaping the Demographic Structure and Social Problems in Finnish Suburbs

Published 1.9.2020Edited 7.3.2024

The aim of this project is to improve the understanding of segregation mechanisms and contribute to the promotion of wellbeing in the suburbs. To achieve this, the project produces detailed information on

  1. the development of demographic structures in large cities,
  2. the types of social problems that are related to the demographic structure,
  3. the effects of selective migration on demographic structure and accumulation of social problems,
  4. the ways social security levels out income disparities between regions and how benefit recipiency is connected the movement of people, and
  5. how social work can support the housing of those in particularly vulnerable positions.

The data comprise individual-level longitudinal register data as well as quantitative and qualitative interview data. Answers to the research questions help to understand the development trajectories of different types of suburbs and to develop housing support mechanisms related to housing production, social security, and social work that can curb segregation and promote housing security. The project is part of the Ministry of the Environment’s national programme for development of suburbs of largest cities, and Kela will carry out substudy 4.
